Side Saddle - first attempt
Side saddle is not just for the ladies - I can vouch for that after an amazing session on the mechanical horse at Grange Farm stud with my instructor and good friend Lisa Lane.
Lisa asked me to go at short notice and I am really glad I made the effort. A lovely venue, warm welcome and a great introduction.
After an intro chat by Janet, I mounted the beast. It took a while to relax into the new position, but I felt it made me sit more correctly at ones - you can't slouch! Off into walk and lovely big warm-blood stride. Trot was incredible, and the canter was to die for! So exhilarating!
The trouble is, now I need to try on a real horse.......

Swish pattern to improve riding position
I have recently changed my horses bit to a Kimblewick and have seen a much better level of control. However, it is easy to hang onto a forward going horses and not allow him to jump properly when you arrive at the jump.
I had a thought and, just before bedtime, I thought of a picture of me approaching a fence hanging on and swished it with one of my hands stiil on his withers, flowing with the movement.
Next day, I jumped a course of working hunter fences at my local show and I automatically let my hands follow - what a difference. We tackled a bigger course than ever before and came 4th.
Swish patterns rule!

The value of 'Values'
Well, I had the most brilliant day on my young horse, Riley, yesterday. We went to a show-cross and managed a 5th in the pairs, and a 3rd individually later.
The most remarkable thing was how I turned a problem around without thinking!
Riley got very strong in the pairs class and I was in serious danger of disappearing onto the horizon. Thanks to my partner, Sue, we came home in one piece but it seemed as if the new magic Kimblewick had run out of effect.
Enter values. Now, I know that control is the most important thing for me in riding, in jumping especially. So, I entered the individual class with the aim to get back that control and enjoy the round.
Riley was very displeased to be jumping again (normally does 1 round only) and had some sillies at the practice fence. As I know he hasn't a bad bone in his body, I just set off round the show jumps as normal - and low and behold a magical round with just one fence down. It was the first time I had cantered an entire showjumping round and it felt good. The cross-country was a breeze - wow did we have some fun!
Control well and truly back, with no great effort, just belief in my value and the honesty of my horse.
Thanks Riley - now just to work on my hands, they keep creeping up in the air.....

How can NLP help me?
NLP - Neuro-Linguistic Programming - helps us understand that we view our world through the filters of our experiences, values and beliefs.
Everyone has a different view of the world, but some views work better than others.
Seeing everything as 'happening to me' is exhausting. If you can see instead causing things to happen - how much better does that feel?
NLP can help with riders by:
- removing limiting beliefs
- understanding what is important for you
- helping you to understand your goals and to achieve them
- removing phobias
- allowing you to have choice again
Many riders (and their horses!) have benefited from simple techniques that make lasting changes.
I know I have!

You can too
